Do the Right Thing

You may be old enough to remember the Spike Lee Joint by the same name from back in the 1980’s. It dealt with racial relations and pizza. This post isn’t about that, but I did steal the name. No, this is a post about football. (Sorry Mrs, MoM!)

I was watching the World Cup games on Sunday. In both games a penalty kick was awarded. For you noobs, a PK is a kick that takes place 12 yards from the goal line. A player gets to take one kick and try to get it past the goal keeper. It has a fairly high rate of success and typically any given team has a designated player who takes a PK.

In yesterday’s match between Brazil and Norway the Brazilians were awarded a “kick from the spot.” The crowd was surprised to see Bruno Guimarães step up for the shot. Not surprisingly, he didn’t score because of lovely save by the Norwegian keeper. In the evening tilt between Mexico and England the Brits were awarded a penalty kick. Their tried and true PK master stepped up and buried his shot in the bottom left corner. Brazil lost their match while England won.

When were are faced with situations in recovery, it is important to do the things that have worked in the past. We don’t want to make critical errors that can cost us dearly. New methods for staying sober are wonderful, and it’s important to be able to pivot, but when the game is on the line, you gotta do the right thing. Send in your PK specialist and…

–Rise Up!!
