On Thursday of last week I took my brother to see a concert for his 60th birthday. The band was Rush, which is his favorite band. They had been together for over 40 years when their drummer passed away from cancer. Everyone pretty much knew that was the end of things. He was a legendary talent who was pretty much irreplaceable.
Then as the 50th anniversary approached they found a drummer who was good enough to fill in for them. A tour was announced and the fans were over the moon. I waited in the online queue several months ago and was able to get tickets for the third show in LA.
As my brother and I milled about with the crowd before the show we reminisced about previous shows we had seen. On the pillars outside the Forum they had massive stickers documenting the 24 sold out shows the band had played there over their long history. It’s rather impressive to see people turn out like that for so many years just to see a nerdy trio from Canada who hasn’t put out any new music since 2012.
In my recovery one of the most important things I can do is keep coming back. Just because I went to a meeting last week doesn’t mean it’s over. I might be hearing something I’ve heard before, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t wonderful to hear. The show must go on, and I’ve got to keep coming back in order to…
—Rise Up!!
