Fasten Seatbelts


I’m writing this from around 30,000 feet. The captain has illuminated the “Fasten Seatbelts” sign because he thinks it’s safer for us that way. Some of us might prefer to be moving about the cabin right now, but that just isn’t in the cards. Now, I’m no airline pilot, so I don’t really know the threshold for such decision making, but even though it seems safe to me, the experts have said otherwise. I’ll just stay seated for now.

In my recovery I often feel like the world is telling me that it’s safe, but the experts say different. “What could it hurt?” or “Just this once won’t matter,” invade my thinking. When that happens, I need to trust the people who know better. I need to listen to my sponsor. I need to trust that the program works. I need to remember my Prayer for Serenity. Just like the captain of this plane, those people will help me to…
