Right Beside You

Yesterday in the prison we did an activity in which the class members were asked to identify three people they want to include in a support network. Some of the guys chose people on the streets while others chose people at the facility. One man even chose Mrs MoM and I.

It was interesting to hear who the men chose, but more interesting still was the reasons they gave for choosing the person. The two most interesting choices were two guys who, without knowing it, named each other. The first man to speak is a “go to” guy for a lot of the inmates, so no real surprise. The cool bit was when he chose the man who chose him.

Picture a man who is over 6 ft tall, probably more than 250 of solid muscle, and a shaved head. Now picture the same guy in prison clothing. Now picture the same guy crying. He was so moved that he couldn’t hold back the tears. He tried, but could not do it.

It was beautiful.

Sometimes when you’re down the person sitting right next to you will help you to…
