Ouch!

Sometimes we get into habits and everything seems normal. My youngest grandson in Hawaii loves to climb up on his parents’ bed and do what can accurately be described as a Death/Trust Fall. He makes sure that you are watching, then stands up straight and tilts backward until gravity takes over and he falls. Plop! Lying face up on the mattress he giggles and repeats the process for several minutes. It’s a riot.

He was doing that this weekend but he forgot one important part of the plan: the mattress. Over he went, right onto the hard wood floor. Ouch!

Very few people have an addiction that starts out with them banging their head on the floor. Most of us have a nice, soft, funny mattress experience. We might even get people to watch and laugh with us as we begin our journey, but eventually we forget to be on a mattress and BAM! Hard wood floor.

When Camden got hurt, Mommy rushed in and scooped him up. She checked his little eyes to see if he got concussed. She felt for the bump and put ice on it. She held him until the hurting stopped. Then she put in a plan to help ensure that he didn’t do the same thing again.

My sponsor did similar things for me to help me find my way into recovery. We can’t eliminate addiction and relapse, but we can certainly take measures to get on a better path. When you fall, find a sponsor to help you…
